Every parent of a young baby knows how hard it can be to get from A to B together. How do you get around in a way that is comfortable for your baby and doesn’t upset naps and feedings? You don’t always want to take the car. And if you’re alone, a baby crying in the back seat while you drive is no fun. A stroller on public transportation isn’t always easy either. Walking with a carrier is nice: you can move freely and your baby is close to you. But of course, you can’t walk everywhere.
It’s tempting to ride a bike with your baby in the carrier, and having your baby close can feel reassuring. But never ride a bike with your baby in a carrier. If you fall or collide, nothing protects your baby. The weight on your front and your limited freedom of movement can also make you fall more easily.
So however easy it may seem, don’t do it, with a carrier or a wrap. Stick to a car seat, a stroller, or walking with the carrier.
Don’t move your baby to a bike seat too early, either. A child must be able to sit on their own for a long stretch to handle a bumpy bike ride. If you see your child slumping during the ride, they are not ready yet.
