Some babies don’t seem to enjoy being in a carrier or wrap at first, and cry or get restless every time they go in. Some even arch their back. Often it’s just a matter of getting used to it. Keep trying when your baby is well rested: start by holding them, and put the carrier on loosely. Walking around or gently swaying often helps your baby feel more comfortable.
Five things to check
If your baby fusses, check for pressure behind the head, tight leg openings, restricted arms or legs, and temperature:
- Is there too much pressure under the back of the head? That can make your baby arch back.
- Are the leg openings too tight, or are the legs squeezed?
- Can the arms, lower legs and head move freely?
- Is the carrier too tight?
- Is your baby too warm or too cold?
